And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
– Jeremiah 29:13
Anthropologists say that in every culture in history, children have played
the game hide and seek.
This game is the fundamental game of the universe. It is played out in the macrocosm and in the microcosm. That Life/God is playing a fun game with itself. Hiding himself in order to play the game of finding herself.
God plays hide and seek. She plays coy so that you have to court her and seduce her. So that your love can be purified. He pretends to hide so that your desire to find him will become irresistible and so that when you find him the joy of the completion of the game may be greater.
It’s all a game of hiding in plain sight. We hide wanting to be found, and we hide in order to draw the other closer toward us…. saying “chase me, chase me!”
The seeker becomes the hider, and the hider becomes the seeker
There is something about the joy of the search, and the wonder in the mystery of where the sought is hiding. And the love of the playfulness of it all.
And the great laughter in discovering that what you sought was right under your nose. That you were hiding from yourself and seeking yourself….
God is like a person who clears his throat while hiding and so gives himself away.
– Meister Eckhart
