In the small industrial city of Kokura, Japan where three diverse seas converge, the Kajiwara family has been selling fish for a hundred years. Their craft is mekiki — the art of seeing that reveals the quality of a fish in a single glance, and their knives move with the precision of master artisans.

When fires and illness force the shop to close, something unexpected emerges from the ending: a mission to carry their ancient craft, passed and honed through generations like a samurai tradition — into the unfamiliar waters of the Western world.

The Way of the Fish – SAKANADO – is the story of a legendary fishmonger family, the vanishing traditions they carry, and one a small group of people’s determination to transform how the West understands not just fish — but food itself and our relationship to it.
